Classify Galaxy10 DECaLS colour galaxy images into 10 morphology classes.

The task

A wide-field telescope has captured many galaxy images; contestants build a classifier that predicts the morphology class (disturbed, merging, round smooth, in-between round smooth, cigar-shaped smooth, barred spiral, unbarred tight spiral, unbarred loose spiral, edge-on without bulge, edge-on with bulge) from an RGB image.

The data come from Galaxy10 DECaLS (about 20,000 256×256 colour cutouts from the Dark Energy Camera Legacy Survey with Galaxy Zoo labels).

Rules
  • Pre-trained models and additional data are not allowed unless the task says otherwise.
  • No outside help; LLM chats, ChatGPT, Copilot and similar tools are prohibited (except Colab inline autocompletion).
  • Only the Kaggle website and Google Colab may be used (no local IDEs); online library documentation is allowed.
  • One Kaggle account per participant; leaderboard name '[City] Name Surname'.
